HEARING GOD
HEARING GOD - Poet Walt Whitman claimed that he heard and beheld God in every object. That certainly is a different way of living and relating to the world around us, isn’t it? And it indicates a particular understanding and belief about the nature of God. Yet, Whitman goes on to say that at the same time he didn’t understand God in the least. Indeed, God is the Great Mystery, and as such we cannot, and perhaps should not, try to define, describe, or fully understand God. God is that great I AM that defies description, as illustrated in the story of Moses standing before the burning bush (Exodus 3). So, although it may seem like an oxymoron, we can understand God not in the least and still hear and behold God in every object, even in the hoot of the magnificent Barred Owl.
