HELP FROM THE HILLS

HELP FROM THE HILLS - The ancients often looked upon the hills, or mountains, as the abode of God.  The ancient Romans and Greeks had their mountains where their gods were thought to dwell.  And the ancient Hebrews revered Mt. Sinai as the place where God spoke to Moses and dictated the Ten Commandments.  When the psalmist declared, “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help” (Psalm 121:1), he most likely was referring to the hills around Jerusalem with Mt. Zion as the main focus.  When I think of lifting up my eyes to the hills, it is the Great Smoky Mountains that first come to mind.  I return to those mountains time and again to be refreshed, encouraged, inspired, and spiritually strengthened.  I feel that there is something sacred – maybe God’s presence – in these beloved mountains.
