ON JESUS AND SPARROWS

ON JESUS AND SPARROWS - “Not one sparrow is forgotten by God,” Jesus said (Luke 12:6).  In other words, Jesus shared an image of God as loving and caring for all creation.  But it sort of baffles the mind to think of the Creator of the vast universe, which scientists tell us is still expanding, as caring about every little sparrow.

As you probably know, the passage drawn from in Luke inspired Civilla D. Martin to write that beloved gospel song, “His Eye Is on the Sparrow” with the concluding affirmation, “and I know He watches me.”  Our educated, scientifically-influenced minds may influence our beliefs regarding a God and universe that take notice of and care for every person and creature, down to the individual sparrow.  But in the time in which we are now living, it is nice to contemplate the possibility every now and then.
